READ MATTHEW 22:35-40
One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Throughout the four biographical books about the life of Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), we see religious leaders attempting to discredit Jesus by asking him difficult questions. In this case, one of the most devout religious leaders of Jesus’ day attempted to trap him by asking him to prioritize one commandment over another. Jesus replied by quoting scripture from Deuteronomy 6. Essentially, Jesus answered: Love God with all your being, and then love people.
Often the key relationships in our life, including marriage, get out of balance because God is not first in our lives. To truly love your spouse best, God must be first, and your spouse must be second. How are you loving God first? How are you loving your spouse second? What can you and your spouse participate in that will help you both love God well together (worship together, read your Bible, pray, join a Grow Together or Serve Together Group)? If you are not married, how can you follow these words of Jesus?
As you pray, ask God to reveal areas of your life where you can love him and others better.
